The following FOODS are NOT SAFE FOR BIRDS.
NEVER FEED:

  • Chocolate
  • Avocado
  • coffee or caffenated beverages / Alcoholic beverages
  • Milk or dairy products*
  • Fruit seeds (including Apple) are toxic
  • Coriander
  • Eggplant
  • French sorrel
  • Onions
  • Potato shoots
  • Tobacco
  • Rhubarb leaves
  • Dendé oil

The following foods are debatable based on different opinions:

  • Tomatoes
  • Garlic
  • Spinach
  • Citrus fruits
  • Persimmon
(some reports say they can be toxic for parrots (Clipsham, 1998)
  • Parsley

* Limit dairy products - birds are Lactose intollerant. Hard cheese may be offered in very small amounts on occassion (benefit is, it's high in calcium).

DANGERS IN THE HOUSEHOLD:

  • Teflon coated (non-stick coated) pots/pans/machine parts becoming overheated will produce a poisonous gas that will kill birds in a matter of seconds.
  • Take care with open basins of water/open toilets/filled uncovered pots, etc.
  • Never paint or remodel with birds in the room. Put them far away from paint odors, etc.!
  • Flighted birds are more apt to escape to the outside or fly into windows or walls. Trimmed wings are not a guarantee that a bird can't fly away outside...they can still get enough wind to fly into a tree and be lost.
  • Swivel rockers, rocking chairs, ceiling fans
  • Don't EVER trust a dog or cat to play with your bird. Even if they may seem to be ok together, it's never a good idea to put your bird at risk. A dog might not intend to harm a bird but could by accident.
  • Poisonous plants and flowers
  • Cleaning products - take care especially with aerosoles
  • Hairspray, tobacco smoke, any aerosole spray can harm a bird's lungs.
